They are the first thing you see before you walk into a shop, they make clothes more beautiful and give you the desire to buy everything! Mannequins are fascinating. They are like Barbies. You can dress them, do their hair, choose their shoes but their articulations remind you they’re fake, made of plastic.

However dummies are sooo important for clothing brands! They are used to attract customers by highlighting the unique collections of the store and displaying the latest trends. You didn’t expect that? Come on girls, it’s called visual merchandising and some of the brands you’ll see below totally forgot about that! Let’s discover 6 controversial mannequins you’ll either hate or love!

1. It’s too much honey

La Perla

Body image: it’s a super sensitive topic, especially in fashion. Lingerie brand La Perla created indignation this year with prominent collar bones on their dummies! Of course, a customer took a picture and rekindled the debate about thinness. However, La Perla is not the only brand which suffered the wrath of customers! GAP, Primark, Glassons and Club Monaco quickly removed their mannequins after their media lynching.

ModelManagement.com‘s opinion: bad buzz!

2. As real women…

Yppig

Yppig mannequins

Finally some brands as Yppig and H&M understood they’re talking to all women by creating curvy mannequins. Despite society tells us to be a size 0 or size 4, we’re not. Does it mean the other sizes (so us) with a beautiful bust and fleshy hips can’t be fashionistas?! Yppig and H&M are proud of your curves girls so be proud of them too!

ModelManagement.com‘s opinion: buzz!

3. Clichés time!

Macy's

Black people are poor. Black people have small ears. Black people dosn’t look like white people (so they’re ugly). Thank you Macy’s you’ve brought these offensive clichés up to date thanks to your mannequin! Picture taken by a customer + social media = brand crisis. Yes, Macy’s you did something very, very wrong.

4. Natural is the best (or not)

American-Apparel

American Apparel mannequins

American Apparel is a controversial brand so I was not really shocked they used hairy mannequins for the New York store window. However I don’t really know what to think about that… even if we decided to look like an apricot and not a kiwi, a hairy vagina is natural (funny comparison right?) and we’ve been seeing a reemergence of natural pubic hair recently! Is American Apparel just following the trend?

ModelManagement‘s opinion: buzz (as always with this brand)!

5. Bravo!

Modissa mannequins by Pro Infirmis

Last year, disabled mannequins were created using measurements from people living with scoliosis, brittle bone disease or shortened limbs. It was an amazing and powerful campaign for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by Pro Infirmis, an organisation for the disabled. They rock!

ModelManagement.com‘s opinion buzz!

6. It’s not a taboo anymore

Levis

Levis mannequins

Levi Strauss used gay mannequins in the cutest way ever! It’s not provocative, not shocking and it’s, especially, not the first time the brand use homosexuality in marketing: in 20 stores, the mannequins’ white Levi’s jeans and shirts were adorned with White Knots, a symbol of solidarity with the same-sex marriage movement!

diesel

Diesel mannequins

I was unable to resist to the first cutie picture but this second one let me thinke. Ok, Diesel just wanted to celebrate the Pride in 2010 by using heterosexual and homosexual mannequins (and that’s great) simulating sexual positions but I’m wondering if people understood this action or kept thinking homosexuality was just a sexual behavior…

ModelManagement.com‘s opinion: buzz for Levi Strauss and Diesel (limit bad buzz for the last)!
